The University of Derby Students' Union is here to represent you, offer you support and advice as well as providing you with some of the essentials of your student life - from our sports teams and societies, to running welfare
campaigns, and hosting some of the most unforgettable nights of the year.
Our independent advice centre, The Source, gives heaps of information, support and advice on a range of issues. Our mission statement is "to defend and extend the rights of our students by proactively creating and
maximising opportunities". See our website for more information about what we do and how you can get involved.

Sports Teams

There are a number of ways to get involved in sport during your time as a student. Contact the Students' Union to find out which teams are running this year for FE students. At Buxton we have a new Sports Hall at Harpur Hill and there will be organised activities throughout the year.

Remember that if you are under 18 years old and you take part in sports activities to check with your parents before you go on any trips to other teams, and to sort out how you will be able to get home afterwards. You need to let other students know that you are under 18 years old.

Societies

Joining a society is a great way to meet new people, try something new or do something you love, as well as building up your CV. Get in touch with the Students' Union to find out about all the societies that you can join or to get support in setting up your own society.

Please be aware that if you are under 18 years old and you join a SU society you need to look after yourself in terms of being able to get home after events and reminding others that you may not be able to take part in all activities because you are under 18 years.

Youth Development Mentors

Youth Development Mentors organise activities, trips and visits throughout the academic year, whilst also supervising the FE common room, known as The Boiler House. They organise guest speakers as well as organising training on issues that affect and interest students

The Boiler House

The Boiler House in Buxton is a specific space designated for Further Education (FE) students to relax and interact with one another and their Students' Union. In the Boiler House you can play loud music, watch DVDs, play on the Xbox, play pool or chill to your heart's content in one of the big comfy chairs. There are also times when there are activities to suit students who want a quieter, more informative time in the Boiler House.
Like all of the other areas of your Students' Union, the Boiler House is here to be led by you. Therefore, if you feel that you'd like to see an event or activity take place, pop down and speak to your friendly youth workers, situated within the Boiler House who'd be more than happy to help. At the Boiler House you may also find our student advisors from The Source (your Students' Union independent advice service). They're available for any students wanting advice or wishing to speak to someone in confidence about anything from money matters to course problems.
