What does this course offer me?
This course will prepare you for a career in the sports sector, with a specific focus on sports development, coaching and fitness.
You will get an insight into various career paths you can take within the sports sector. When you've completed this course you'll be able to start working in the sector, progress in your current job or move on to a University level course.
Tell me about the course in general
The course is made up of a variety of units including:
- Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
- Sports Development
- Sports Coaching
- Fitness Testing for Sports and Exercise.
During the first year the content is set, but during the second year you'll be able to focus on the areas you are most interested in.
You will spend two weeks in work related placement of your choice. In the past, students have attended professional football clubs, physiotherapy departments and sports development centres.
You may be able to take extra short courses throughout the year, including first aid and coaching certificates.
You'll need to buy a basic sports kit package. We'll give you more details about this after your interview. If you need halp paying for the sports kit or books, you can apply for a grant from the University Support Fund.
The course also includes several fieldtrips throughout the year, which you may need to pay towards. We'll let you know the cost before the trip.

What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness), which is equivalent to three A levels, plus Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English.
What can I go on to next?
There are a wide variety of possible careers you could follow. For example you could become a sport and excercise scientist, or a sports coach. Or you could move on to a university level qualification.

How will I be assessed?
The course is 100% coursework, with various methods of assessment integrated into it.
What do I need to join the course?
You'll need four GCSEs at grades A* - C or equivalent qualifications. Ideally, these grades will include English and Maths, but we'll consider all applications on an individual basis.
You will also be interviewed and you'll need a good reference from your school , college or employer.
