Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship means that you are learning while you're working. You'll have a job and at the same time be studying for a nationally recognised qualification in your area of work.

BTEC First Diploma

A BTEC is a very practical qualification, which focuses on helping you learn skills to go into a particular area of work. This diploma usually takes one year of full time study.

BTEC National Diploma

Like the other BTEC, it's a practical qualification, but this is an advanced, level 3 qualification - roughly the same as two to three A levels. It usually takes two years of full time study.

NVQs

NVQs are designed by employers who know what skills they want their employees to have. So you will practise work related tasks and develop the skills and knowledge to do a job effectively.

CACHE certificate and award

These are qualifications in childcare and education and range from beginners' courses to advanced qualifications for care and education professionals.

The Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education (CACHE) designs the qualifications.

Learning for Living and Work - For adults and young people with additional support needs

Learning for Living and Work courses help people: develop personal skills, become more independent, learn skills to help with jobs or training, and get involved in the community.

Basic and Key Skills

These are useful skills for work and education, and will be part of your course, whatever qualification you do.

The skills are:

  • literacy and communication
  • numeracy and application of number
  • information communication technology
  • improving your own learning and performance
  • working with others, and
  • problem solving.
