Tournament Celebrates 100 Days Till Paralympic Games
24 May 2012
Buxton College hosted an inter-schools sport tournament in collaboration with Derbyshire Disability Sport to mark 100 days to go to the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Twenty-two children from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS), Hope Valley School and Chapel en le Frith High School, took part in a hotly contested tournament of the inclusive sport, Boccia, which will be played by athletes during the 2012 Paralympic Games.
Boccia is a seated target sport, similar to bowls, which relies upon the skill and subtlety of the player rather than their size, speed and strength. As such it can be played by people young or
old with any disability.
Chapel High School and QEGS were crowned joint winners after a tense final ended in a draw.
Buxton College and University of Derby Buxton sports students, who have been undertaking their Level 1 Boccia Teaching qualification during the past year, assisted during the event on May 21 to ensure the competition ran smoothly.
James Cook, Derbyshire Sport's Disability Sport Development Officer, said: "The event was a great success, and all of the children had a fantastic day competing in a sport they love. We must thank Buxton College and its students for hosting the day, it was a great way to mark 100 days to go to the Paralympic Games."
Karen Wardley, Head of Division at Buxton College, said: "We were delighted to host the competition as part of our commitment to the values of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as a member of the Get Set Network."
The Get Set Network is a special community of schools and colleges across the UK who all demonstrate a commitment to the values of respect, friendship, equality, excellence, inspiration, courage and determination.
"Joining the Network has given us fantastic opportunity to inspire our young students to try more sports and raise their aspirations to do well in sport through events such as this one."
