Emma Lomas won 'Best Overall Look' with her zebra inspired hair, beauty and costume

This year's Hair and Beauty Showcase was a fantastic opportunity for our students to show off just what they can do with hair and beauty, and to create something truly original. They certainly did that today, and can all be very proud of what they achieved through lots of hard work.

Animals and birds, Greek goddesses and characters from books and films were all represented through imaginative hair and beauty techniques when Buxton College students held their annual showcase (scroll down for the video).

The Hairdressing NVQ Level 3 and Advanced Modern Apprentices used the latest hair styling techniques learned on their courses and drew on their imaginations to create original 'avant garde' styles, enhancing the hair using make-up with help from NVQ Level 3 Beauty Therapy students. They used clothing and props to complete the looks which included the Mad Hatter, white and black swans, a zebra, a peacock, Cruella de Vil, a mermaid, Medusa and the Queen of Hearts at the showcase on Monday (April 23).

Professionals from the hair and beauty industry across Buxton and the High Peak including Kerry Cousins from Profile Hair Salon, Huw Ellis from Evolution, Louise Godsil from Ellison's, Marisa Hallows from JD Hair and Beauty, Victoria Higgs from Elemis, Gillian Lomas from Blakes The Art of Hair, Debbie Stubbs from Francesco Group and Terry Turner from Sterex Stageline judged the 31 students' work.

Three winners were announced after an hour spent studying each of the models up close, followed by much deliberating amongst the judges.

Emma Lomas, 27, from Chapel-en-le-Frith, was crowned winner of 'Best Total Look' for her zebra inspired 'up-do', which involved curling pieces of hair around a metal pin to create tiny pin curls on fine hair, which were then built up in to a 'Mohican mane'. Emma took home a £150 prize donated by City &Guilds.

Laura Davies, 19, from Buxton, was given the 'Best Overall Hair' prize for her peacock inspired look, which involved plenty of crimping, backcombing and complex styling; taking home a £100 prize donated by City & Guilds.

Level 3 Beauty Therapy student Maddie Wragg, 18, from Great Hucklow, was awarded 'Best Overall Makeup' for her Moulin Rouge model, winning beauty products donated by Ellison's.

Louise Godsil from Ellison's said: "I am amazed at what the students have done with hair today. The styles are beautiful, and dramatic, and many of the beauty students have used make-up simply but effectively to create some incredible looks."

A guest judge was Chloe Meredith from Profile Hair Salon in Buxton, a former Buxton College student. Chloe was asked to return as the winner of last year's Hair and Beauty Showcase.

She said: "The quality on show was really good, overall it's been incredibly creative and there are some very individual styles on display."

Mary Blauciak, Head of Buxton College said: "This year's Hair and Beauty Showcase was a fantastic opportunity for our students to show off just what they can do with hair and beauty, and to create something truly original. They certainly did that today, and can all be very proud of what they achieved through lots of hard work."
