Students' Taste Of The High Life
7 June 2012
Travel and Tourism students at Buxton College got a taste of life working in the skies when they were given a day's cabin crew training with Thomas Cook at its academy in Woodford, near Wilmslow, recently.
Working with Thomas Cook cabin crew and trainers, the seven travel and tourism students went through a day of training in emergency situations such as opening and closing aircraft doors in emergency mode, evacuating an aircraft in event of fire and smoke, and managing medical emergencies involving passengers.
In taking part in the day's training all of the students completed key areas of their Certificate in Introduction to Cabin Crew, an extra element of the College's BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism.
Carol Walker, Course Leader at Buxton College, said: "By attending the Thomas Cook training day and working towards this certificate our students have learned some highly transferable skills for the travel and tourism industry. They also got a real insight into the roles of cabin crew, such as health and safety, security, the role of crew, passenger focus, selling skills and emergencies.
"We must thank Thomas Cook for giving the students such a wonderful opportunity."
Student Kim Williams, 18, from Buxton, said: "It was a great experience. It was really useful to learn about the different incidents that could occur onboard an aircraft from real cabin crew."
Buxton College students also get to experience working in the skies throughout their course at the College's own 'demonstration cabin' at its campus, which consists of 16 airline seats, trolleys, safety demonstration equipment and duty free.
Carol added: "Being able to learn and train in our own demonstration cabin and spending the day with Thomas Cook gives our students a passion and the skills to work in the skies. Only last year two of our students went on to become cabin crew with leading passenger airlines."
