It was great that we were able to hold this event at the Dome, getting the puppies together in new environments is really important for their socialisation and training.

Around 20 guide dog puppies and their walkers enjoyed a social get together in the Buxton Dome recently, as part of Guide Dogs Week (1 - 9 October), a celebration of Guide Dogs for the Blind's 80th year.

Puppies Sykes, Stevie, Chelsea, Bonnie, Jack and Zara were among 20 retrievers and Labradors aged from four months to a year old, and in their first year of training.  The event in the Dome, which was busy with students of the University of Derby Buxton and Buxton College, was held to help the puppies get used to socialising with other dogs and experiencing new places, people and unfamiliar noises.

Jane Hill, puppy walking supervisor for Guide Dogs for the Blind, said: "It was great that we were able to hold this event at the Dome, getting the puppies together in new environments is really important for their socialisation and training.

"Many guide dog owners from the Buxton area also came along with their dogs and got involved with the 80th anniversary celebrations."

The puppies' parents were looked after by hospitality and culinary arts students at the University of Derby Buxton, as part of the University's commitment to the local community.
