Public Services students with the cheque

Students from Buxton College raised a fantastic £1,396 for the charity 'When You Wish Upon a Star' by completing a gruelling physical challenge back in June. The students recently welcomed the charity to the Buxton Dome to hand the cheque over to them.

During the 24-hour challenge, which began at 11am on June 16 and ended at 11am on June 17, 80 students from the College's Uniformed Public Services and Sports BTEC National Diplomas took four-hour-long shifts, rowing and cycling on stationary machines and running around the Dome, keeping up continuous activity for the full 24-hour period . In total they completed over 1,500 miles by bike, boat and on foot.

Richard Robinson, Lecturer on the Uniformed Public Services course, said: "We do this challenge for the students each year to give them a chance to do some fundraising, and to experience working in a team to complete a challenge.

"This is really worthwhile experience for them, and may help them in their future careers.

"The students did fantastically well over the challenge this year, keeping up the momentum to last the whole 24 hours and notching up 1,558 miles overall.  The amount they raised for 'When You Wish Upon a Star' was amazing, we are very proud of them all."
