What does this course offer me?

  • This is a full Level 2 qualification that's equivalent to four GCSEs at grades A*-C.
  • If you successfully complete the course, you'll achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
  • You can go on to a BTEC Level 3 Diploma or other Level 3 qualification afterwards.
  • You will develop valuable IT skills that are essential in the workplace.

Tell me about the course in general

It's a practical, work related course. It is structured so that you can move on to any IT, business, music or media course and even into employment.

You will study for about 15 hours a week in the classroom and are expected to put in at least four hours of your own study.

There are seven units to study over one year. These units aim to develop your skills in a variety of areas, giving you a range of choices about what to do after the course.

Units are likely to include:

  • Communicating in the IT industry
  • Working in the IT industry
  • Computer Systems
  • Website Development
  • Database Software
  • Spreadsheet Modelling
  • Graphics.

We'll let you know the full details at the beginning of the year you start.

You may need to pay for specialist materials associated with the course.

What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT, plus Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English

What can I go on to next?

You could move on to a BTEC Level 3 Diploma or other level 3 qualification. Alternatively, you could start a full time job.

How will I be assessed?

There will be no exams. You'll be assessed using the assignments and projects you complete, which are based on realistic workplace situations. You will complete an assignment or portfolio for each of the seven units.

What do I need to join the course?

You will normally need to have one of the following:

  • at least three GCSEs at grade D
  • a BTEC Foundation Certificate in a similar subject
  • Pathway 2 Progression: Level 1 Diploma in Vocational Studies (see page 36).

We'll also be looking for several personal qualities:

  • an interest in the subject
  • the motivation to work independently on project work
  • satisfactory attendance records
  • a satisfactory reference.
