What does this course offer me?


  • This course is an intensive, nationally recognised qualification covering accommodation, reception and basic supervisory skills and food and beverage preparation and service.

  • It's an ideal course to take if you're starting your training in hospitality and want an introduction to the key areas.

  • You'll receive lots of practical training in our on site restaurants and kitchens and go on work experience, so you'll get to know what it's like working in this field. 

  • You'll have opportunities to enter national competitions, which will help you to get yourself noticed by employers and build contacts.

Tell me about the course in general

This course combines practical training with theory sessions, demonstrations and lectures.

Subjects you'll study include practical cookery, food and drink service, business skills, event management, team leading, human resource management and customer service. 

You'll usually attend College from Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend and evening events.

This year our students have been on visits to Chatsworth House, The Trafford Centre, had a guest speaker from Glenagles, Concord Hotels, and from local businesses. Speakers gave demonstrations in our demonstration lecture theatre, and students have also been able to hear from the Stilton Cheese Association in a guest lecture attended earlier in the year.

Hospitality and Catering students are able to take part in work placement opportunities as part of the course. BTEC students have been able to work in Gleneagles, Bolton Abbey, The Lowry in Manchester and The Lakeside in the Lake District, giving each and every one valuable experience of the industry.

What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Hospitality,Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English and a Food Safety certificate

What can I go on to next?

You could go on to further study in hospitality management or professional culinary arts here at the University of Derby BUxton, start working in a junior managerial position or enhance your qualifications in areas such as cookery or restaurant service.

How will I be assessed?

Your progress and achievements will be assessed throughout the course using a variety of assignments, projects and tests. You'll have support from a group tutor and others who are all highly experienced professionals.

What do I need to join the course?

Four GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English
