Tell me about the course in general
As an apprentice in healthcare, you could gain practical experience in a range of areas including hospitals, the community, doctors' surgeries, hospices, private clinics or opticians.
In this qualification, you can focus on the area most appropriate to you: the options range from maternity to radiotherapy support.
Social care is about helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled or the elderly. As an apprentice in social care, you could be a personal care assistant helping someone in thier everyday life - usually in their own home or a care home.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Health and Social Care, NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care and Functional Skills at Level 2 in communication and numeracy.
What can I go on to next?
Often we find that the job or placement you have for your apprenticeship/NVQ will turn into a full time position. Many organisations have health and social care jobs which you would be suitable for, including:
- care managers
- day care managers
- dietetic assistants
- senior healthcare assistants
- occupational therapy or physiotherapy assistants
- radiotherapy assistants
- senior support workers.
You could also go on to university level courses in subjects like nursing or midwifery - for example at the Derby Campus of the University of Derby.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in a variety of ways including obsevations in your workplace or workplacement, set tasks and written assignments.
Length
Advanced Apprenticeship: Between 12 and 15 months. Each week, you'll spend four days in your workplace and one day in College.
Full time NVQ course: One year.
