  • You'll be assessed at your workplace, you need to prepare for and attend these assessment visits and any other appointments.

Tell me about the course in general

As an apprentice in healthcare, you could gain practical experience in a range of areas including hospitals, the community, doctors' surgeries, hospices, private clinics or opticians.

You could be supporting doctors or nurses in clinical roles or helping patients in hospital wards or their homes - serving food, making and changing beds and so on.

In this qualification, you can focus on the area appropriate to you: the options range from maternity to radiotherapy support.

Social care is about helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled or the elderly. As an apprentice in social care, you could be a personal care assistant helping someone in their everyday life - usually in their own home or in care homes.

What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care, NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care and Functional Skills in communication and numeracy at level 1.

What can I go on to next?

Often we find that the job or placement you have for your apprenticeship/NVQ will turn into a full time position. The NHS, private sector, local authorities and the armed forces all have health and social care jobs which you would be suitable for, including:

  • care workers
  • day care assistants
  • healthcare assistants
  • healthcare support workers
  • home care assistants
  • medical assistants (Armed Forces only)
  • nursing assistants
  • support services.

You could also further your training by going onto the Advanced Apprenticeship.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in a variety of ways including observations in your workplace,or work placement set tasks and written assignments.

Length

Apprenticeship: Between 12 and 15 months. Each week, you'll spend four days in your workplace and one day in college.

Full time NVQ: One year.

What do I need to join the course?

Basic communication skills and the desire to care for people. For the apprenticeship you will need to be working in the health or social care field, or be able to find a suitable work placement.
