What does this course offer me?
You can gain the skills and knowledge you need for a career in health and social care, including nursing, midwifery, social work, occupational therapy, childcare, counselling or even work as a teaching assistant.
Tell me about the course in general
You'll attend College two to three days a week, and you'll have three week long placements throughout the year.
You'll take units including:
- Communication
- Equality and diversity
- Health and Safety
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Psychology.
You'll choose from units including:
- Nutrition
- Complementary Therapies
- Human Inheritance
- Dealing with Challenging Behaviour
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Research Methodology for Health Care
- Public Health
- Physiological Disorders
- Mobility and Exercise for Health and Social Care
- Health Education.
What qualifications will I get?
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care which is the equivalent of 3 A levels. You'll also get the chance to gain extra qualifications, for example Functional Skills and an HSE approved First Aid qualification.
What can I go on to next?
You'll be ready to move onto a range of higher level courses, such as a foundation degree or a degree, or go into full time work in health and social care.
How will I be assessed?
Through assignments, projects, case studies, activities based on placement, as well as group and individual presentations.
Work placements
You'll take part in three week long work placements throughout the year, ranging from nursery to care of the elderly.
What do I need to join the course?
- Five GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent), which must include English Language and Maths. A Science is desirable for those seeking nursing and midwifery as the next step.
- A level 2 qualification in a relevant subject such as a CACHE Diploma in Childcare Education, or a BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care, Level 2 diploma in Society Health and Development with a merit/distinction profile.
