What does this course offer me?
- Gain the skills and knowledge you'll need to start a career in care, in areas such as social work, childcare, counselling or education.
- It's a nationally recognised qualification, which allows you to go on to study a range of subjects at diploma level.
Tell me about the course in general
You'll learn the key skills you'll need to work in a variety of care jobs, as well as improving your academic skills. You'll also have the opportunity to gain Functional Skills qualifications.
You'll be taught in a group and receive one to one support from specialists.
You'll come into College three or four days a week and go on a work placement one day a week. During some weeks you'll spend the whole week on placement.
You will take these core units:
- Communication and Individual Rights within the Health and Social Care Sectors
- Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors.
And you'll choose from these specialist units:
- Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting (you'll do 60 hours of work experience during this unit)
- Anatomy and Physiology for Health Care Practice
- Human Lifespan Development
- Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care
- The Impact of Diet on Health.
What qualifications will I get?
BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care, plus Functional Skills qualifications in Maths, English and ICT.
What can I go on to next?
You could get a job as a care worker or, if you get an overall Merit or Distinction, go on to another course, such as the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, CACHE Level 3 Diploma in childcare and Education or QCF Level 3 qualification Health and Social Care.
How will I be assessed?
You'll be assessed through assignments, projects, case studies, activities linked to your placement, as well as individual and group presentations.
What do I need to join the course?
You'll need one of the following:
- four GCSEs at grade D or above - one must be in English language
- a foundation Level GNVQ
- an Edexcel Entry Vocational Skills Certificate.
You'll also need a good school or college reference and a satisfactory CRB check.
