  • You need to be willing to do some work on your own.
  • You'll be assessed at your workplace, you need to prepare for and attend these assessment visits and any other appointments.

Tell me about the course in general

This course consists of nine units that you have to take, including Health and Safety and six specialist hairdressing technical units:

  • Ensure Your Own Actions Reduce Risk to Health and Safety
  • Give Clients a Positive Impression of Yourself and Your Organisation
  • Advise and Consult with Clients
  • Shampoo and Condition Hair and Scalp
  • Change hair colour
  • Style and finish hair
  • Set and dress hair
  • Cut hair using basic techniques
  • Plait and twist hair.

You'll have 24 theory sessions at College to support the practical skills you've learned in your workplace. You will take final assessments within your salon.

What qualifications will I get?

NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing and a range of Key Skills qualifications.

What can I go on to next?

The NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing or an advanced apprenticeship.

How will I be assessed?

You'll be continually assessed by a variety of methods including practical observations, question and answer sessions, written assessments, and assignments.

It may also be necessary to gain a technical certificate, but this is still to be confirmed.

12-15 months, depending on your ability.

What do I need to join the course?

You'll need to be working in hairdressing and have one GCSE grade C in English and two Cs in other subjects. If you've got recognised previous experience, you may be able to use this to help you get on to the course.

You'll also be interviewed to check the course is suitable for you, and you need to show you have a professional attitude.
