What does this course offer me?

This course provides an excellent and varied programme giving access to University or to a wide variety of careers within the Uniformed Public Services. You will develop a broad range of skills, knowledge and understanding. You'll take a range of units that will show you how the public services operate and how they deal with various situations.

Engagement with a large variety of uniformed public services is key to this exciting, demanding and active course. Full participation in activities and study will give you the most from the course.

Tell me about the course in general

You will study five core units, including:

  • Government Policies and the Public Services
  • Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services
  • Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
  • Understanding Discipline in the Public Services
  • Fitness Testing and Training for the Uniformed Public Services.

Specialist units will include:

  • Apects of the Legal System and Law Making Process
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Career Planning in the Public Services
  • Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Skills for Land Based Activities
  • Responding to Incidents in the Emergency Services.

You will have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities, events and visits including:

  • Houses of Parliament
  • Manchester Crown Court
  • Royal Courts of Justice
  • Outdoor Activities expeditions
  • Police and fire stations. 

You may need to pay for specialist materials associated with this course.

There is a compulsory course uniform, which you will need to wear in college.

Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and then an overall grade is awarded on completion. You will also undertake qualifications in either Functional Skills English or Functional Skills Mathematics.

What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services, plus Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English

What can I go on to next?

You could start your career in a uniformed public service job in the Police, Fire and Rescue Service, security, Armed Forces. 

Alternatively, you could go on to study one of our university degree courses, which could lead to a career in areas such as emergency disaster planning, environmental services or a career in the law and criminology, or forensics areas.

Many employers, not only in the public services, value the skills and knowledge you'll gain during this course.

How you'll learn

The course aims to develop an awareness of the public services in general and the roles they play in society. You will develop an awareness of the wider political and social environment of the public services both in a national and international context. You will prepare both body and mind for the rigour and stresses of working in this sector. Physical fitness, communication and problem solving skills are important to this area.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through coursework assignments, so there are no exams. Functional skills are assessed through exams.

Work placements

You will need to carry out volunteering activities and also a work placement.

Two years, full-time.

What do I need to join the course?

At least four GCSEs at Grades A-C, preferably including English and/or Maths.

Good personal preparation and a reasonable degree of fitness would be advantageous. You will also need to attend our college to discuss your application further prior to starting the course.
