What does this course offer me?

This course provides an excellent and varied programme giving access to Higher Education or to a wide variety of non-uniformed careers within the Public Services. You will develop skills, knowledge and understanding in Public Services and apply your learning in a practical and realistic way.

Tell me about the course in general

You will study five core units including:

  • Government, Policies and the Public Services
  • Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services
  • Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services
  • Public Service Data Interpretation
  • Enhancing Public Service Delivery through the Use of ICT.

Specialist units will include:

  • Crime and its Effects on Society
  • Current and Media Affairs
  • Police Powers and the public Services
  • Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services
  • Aspects of the Legal System and Law Making Process
  • Social Welfare Services.

You will have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities, events and visits including:

  • Houses of Parliament
  • Manchester Crown Court
  • Royal Courts of Justice
  • Outdoor Activities expeditions
  • Police and fire stations. 

You may need to pay for specialist materials associated with this course.

There is a compulsory course uniform, which you will need to wear in college.

Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and then an overall grade is awarded on completion. You will also undertake qualifications in either Functional Skills English or Functional Skills Mathematics.

 

What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Non-Uniformed Public Services, plus Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English

What can I go on to next?

Our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-Levels and can attract a maximum of 420 UCAS points. You could therefore go on to study one of our university degree courses, which could lead to a career in areas such as the social sciences, business, law and criminology, youth and welfare, or forensics areas.

Many employers, not only in the public services, value the skills and knowledge you'll gain during this course.

How you'll learn

You will engage with a large variety of uniformed public services. This is an exciting, demanding and active course. You will be expected to give full participation in order to gain the most from the course.

Although active and vocational, the course has a considerable amount of classroom-based study. Approximately 60% of your learning is academic.

Work placements

You will need to carry out volunteering activities and also a work placement.

What do I need to join the course?

At least four GCSEs at Grades A-C, preferably including English and/or Maths. Alternatively, you will require a Level 2 qualification (e.g. BTEC Level 2 Diploma) at Merit grade.

Good personal preparation and a reasonable degree of fitness would be advantageous. You will also need to attend our college to discuss your application further prior to starting the course.
