What does this course offer me?

You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You'll gain the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to prepare you for a career in the public or community services, such as the police, fire and rescue service, Army, prison or security services or a career in law or criminology.

The structure of the course allows you to develop your individual interests and gain a broad foundation of knowledge in a practical environment.

Tell me about the course in general

During the course you will take four core units:

  • Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Public Service Skills
  • Career Planning for the Public Services
  • Improving Health and Fitness for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services

You will also take these specialist units:

  • Driving and its relationship to Public Services
  • Sport and Recreation in the Public Services
  • Adventurous Activities and Teamwork for the Public Services

You'll have assignments to do and these may be written, verbal presentations or groupwork. You will have deadlines to work to so you will need to be organised and self disciplined.

You'll also take part in visits and residential trips including:

  • Camping expeditions
  • Police, fire and rescue stations.

You may need to pay for specialist materials associated with this course.

There is a compulsory course uniform, which you'll need to wear in College.

In order to improve your opportunity to progress onto a more advanced course or into employment, you will also undertake qualifications in Functional Skills English.

What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services, plus Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English

What can I go on to next?

If you successfully complete this year with an overall Merit you will be able to move on to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services, which will open up a range of career options for you.

Or you can enter a career in Public Services such as the Armed Forces, Police, Fire or Ambulance Service, Security or Prison Services, UK Border Agency, or Local Government Administration.

How you'll learn

All units are assessed through project and assignment work. There are no external examinations. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* and then an overall grade is awarded on completion.

How will I be assessed?

It's 100% coursework. You will be expected to complete assignments during the year that may include written tasks, practical activities and presentations.

One year full-time.

What do I need to join the course?

At least four GCSEs at Grade D or above, preferably including English, or Pathway 2 Progression: Level 1 Diploma in Vocational Studies (see page 36).

A good level of fitness and personal presentation would be advantageous.

You will also need to attend our College to discuss your application further prior to starting.
