What does this course offer me?

  • You'll be taught by our friendly and enthusiastic staff, who have a wide range of experience in the motor vehicle industry.

Tell me about the course in general

It is designed for mechanics who want to improve and update their practical skills, knowledge and supervisory skills while they're working.

You'll learn mostly through your work but you will attend College one evening a fortnight for the theory sessions. These sessions will support the practical elements you'll be learning in your workplace.

You'll cover these units:

  • Diagnose and Rectify Vehicle Engine and Component Faults
  • Diagnose and Rectify Vehicle Chassis System Faults
  • Diagnose and Rectify Light vehicle Transmissions and Driveline System Faults
  • Diagnose and Rectify Auxiliary Equipment Electrical Faults.

You'll also study for a techinical certificate and Key Skills qualifications.

You may need to pay for specialist materials associated with this course.

What qualifications will I get?

NVQ Level 3 in Motor Vehicle, key Skills qualifications in Maths, English and ICT and technical certificates and advanced apprenticeship certificates

What can I go on to next?

You can move on to the Foundation Degree in Motorsport Engineering or Motorcycle Engineering at the University's Derby Campus.

How will I be assessed?

You'll be assessed through ongoing practical assessments and a portfolio of evidence, which you'll put together. Questions and answers will be used to test your knowledge during assessments. You'll also need to pass a computer based (GOLA) multiple choice test.

What do I need to join the course?

It's expected that you will already have the Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle, but we may also be able to take into account your previous experience.
